About

I was born in Derry City, Northern Ireland and have settled in the Wye Valley, South Wales, UK. It's a picturesque area of Wales and a great area for landscape photography. It is considered an Area of Outstanding Beauty and I love living here. Just north of where i live are the Brecon Beacons and Tintern Abbey is just down the road. It's a great base for my photography if a little in the sticks for anything else ;)

I've been taking photographs for half my lifetime and hopefully one day will make money from this hobby of mine. My brother Alan was the guy who inspired me to take photographs. He would vanish every couple of days and come back with large prints that he had developed at the local community centre. I think I've inherited his style to a degree and I'm glad to hear that he's also inspired my nephew to take up photography. One day I hope to show both their work on this site under the Philson Photography banner.

My photographic style, and I assure you I think I have one, is as some have told me compositionally exact. Not that people should stick by the rule of thirds as where would the fun in that be ! But I do like a focal point in pictures and I do have lines all over them. I don't mean to do it but my eye is naturally drawn to doing so. I take photographs of anything and everything but mainly landscapes and architecture. I've just started doing some people photography and I am really enjoying it. Helps to have good patient models though !

• Runner up in the Wye Valley Tourism 2004 competition "Impressions of the Wye Valley" for my picture of Tintern Abbey and shown in an Monmouth Museum exhibition
